Wayfinder BEGINS

In a GIS (geographical information system) course during Katherine’s forestry program she had to come up with an idea for her major project that had to incorporate the collection of data to be edited, analyzed, manipulated, then applied to a map of the earth through coordinates. During this time her sister had gotten lost on a complex trail network. Luckily, she was found then guided out of the forest by a horseback rider who gave her a map of the area. This experience sparked the idea for the class project that is now Wayfinder Trails and Recreation.

About us

Wayfinder Trails and Recreation, it is a FREE outdoor recreation smartphone app that provides detailed information for trails and their related activities. The app launched in Thunder Bay during December of 2018 with plans to expand to a number of communities in Northwestern Ontario.

Katherine Couzelis is the Co-founder and Project Manager. Upon graduating as a Forest Technician, Katherine received her Aboriginal Canadian Relations certificate and previously obtained her Travel and Tourism diploma. Her recent internship with the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Centre taught her how to combine her previous education and work experience to become a motivated young entrepreneur.

As a small local business of Thunder Bay, Ontario we are working towards expanding to other regions of Northwestern Ontario. We aim to be available in the city and townships that have a lack of outdoor recreational resource materials. Recently (2020) we started to develop components of the smartphone application that enable us to crowdsource information. If you are interested in volunteering as a data collector for your area please contact us directly.

That is yet to be determined, but don’t worry! We’re working on getting Wayfinder in tip-top shape to reach your area.

As one of or goals is to promote environmental stewardship, we are currently working on different ways to incorporate educational features that will teach users about the area and how to conserve the natural beauty and habitat around Northwestern Ontario.
